Today our second Boycott Workfare demonstration took place outside The Salvation Army charity shop Ashton Under Lyne.
Once again the manager was very hostile. She said that she likes working outside the Jobcentre down the road because in her words “it’s doing them a favour”. No words of compassion were uttered from her lips when once again she was informed about the facts of workfare. She is however, a paid member of staff and her sympathies very obviously lie with the Jobcentre.
However, we did a good job of aiding awareness again and we informed members of the public about workfare.
We will be back, and hopefully more people will join us. We don’t have a set day or time for this as the element of surprise is important.
Interesting to note, when she called security they ignored us and left us alone as we were exercising our right to protest peacefully.
The manager asked us quite arrogantly “What would you like to achieve by doing this?” We answered together “An end to your shop and other Salvation Army shops using workfare.”
Working alongside Boycott Workfare this can be achieved.

Big shout out for our weekly Jobcentre demo tomorrow. 10-12am (Thursday). 101 Old Street Ashton Under Lyne. Numbers might be low so if anyone could attend we would be really grateful. We have been doing these demonstrations for over 17 months now and it’s hard going. Winter is always hard, but we keep at it because we give people hope.

Far below I also added some quotes from Cesar Chavez, one if the greatest community organizers in recent history. He organized people in the farm industry, an Industry so inhumanely oppressed that even to this day most of the farm workers in the USA do not get the legal minimum hourly wage for their work. So hopefully his words in light of his struggles may inspire you as it does me as we face the Salvation Army worldwide which is paying people less than minimum wage with Workfare in Britain and forced, unpaid chores under threat of illegal eviction for many extremely Disabled residents paying rent (they call it program fees) to Salvation Army in places like Salvation Army Bell shelter, the largest shelter on the West Coast.
It is a descent into slavery.

There is just so much valuable free labour available to charities through these workfare schemes. It is all too easy for them to look the other way, and take part in these practices. Particularly when many other charities are reaping the benefits of doing so.
This will be an increasing problem when Universal Credit is more widely introduced.
Replacing as it does, specific named workfare schemes with individual ‘work preparation’ plans, arranged via Jobcentre Work Coaches and training providers.
So workfare will move into the shadows, but it will still be workfare none the less, and just as morally wrong.
